Anglers
turn out in force to support Ian
On
Saturday 14th September a sponsored fishing match was held to raise funds
for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
On the day of the event, a total of 38 anglers from around the area were
in attendance to support North Anston angler Ian Barnett who this week
was admitted to Sheffields Hallamshire Hospital to undergo very
serious surgery to help him overcome cancer.
Ian, who is a long time angling colleague of mine, organised the match
following several stays in Doncaster Hospital earlier in the year when
he was diagnosed with the illness.
He and his family wanted to show their appreciation to the highly specialised
Macmillan Nurses, who do a wonderful job all over the country to support
cancer patients and their families.
When he visited my home earlier in the week, Ian stated that he was so
proud to have raised a total of £701.01 towards the worthy cause
(the odd penny coming from the charity box donated by Gateford Angling
Supplies).
He also informed me that he was looking forward to getting back out on
the bank after his post operative convalescence that should take approximately
six months.
The fund raising match was held at Lodge Farm Fisheries and the owners,
Bill and Debbie Aukland, made generous contributions towards the event.
The match was won by J. Foster with 11lb 5oz, second was C. Clayton with
9lb 4.5oz and third place was taken by D. Lee with 8lb 1oz.
Everyone caught fish and they all agreed that it had been a good match,
with the most important winner being Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Bill Cotton of Nutra Baits also sponsored the event making sure that there
were no losers, as every angler went home with an angling goodie bag.
Ian and his family have asked me to express their sincere thanks to Bill
and to everyone else who donated raffle prizes.
Thanks are also extended to Jeff Mawby of Gateford Angling Supplies and
all of his customers who rallied to the cause.
I would like to extend a sincere good luck message to Ian and on behalf
of all the anglers in the region who know him we wish you a speedy
recovery and we all look forward to seeing you out on the banks with your
fishing gear once again.
