Anglers’ AGM sets prices for the year

The Annual General Meeting of Worksop and District Anglers Association (WDAA) took place on Thursday at the Innings, Prospect Estate.

Over 60 members were in attendance to formulate and confirm the constitution and prices for the ensuing year.

In his opening address, the president asked all the members to stand for the customary one minute silence in memory of those who had died during the past year.

He then delivered his second annual report covering both the positive and negative activities that had occurred during the season.

The first major topic that he referred to was that of the finances by once again highlighting the following facts: membership book sales were down 14 per cent, affiliated clubs were down eight per cent, day tickets and match bookings were down 11 per cent. He stated that he thought that the downturn had now reached its lowest trough and was showing signs of levelling off.

The president continued his address by informing those in attendance that the executive committee were always working hard to improve fishing for the membership and then made reference to each individual fishery as follows: Sandhill Lake is now open all year round and has got 80 new permanent pegs. The lake was restocked in December 2001 with over 10,000 small hybrid carp.
The association is currently running a midweek open match series to raise funds for some fishing platforms.

Woodsetts Quarry Pond was still subject to the close season ruling but it was hoped that this could be re-negotiated for future seasons. Vehicular access to the wood side pegs has now been improved dramatically.

The Chesterfield Canal has also been subject to a fish re-stocking campaign and this year will be the venue for a NFA Embassy Pairs qualifier that should create good publicity for the association. Thanks were extended to Roger Marsh (WDAA Fishery Officer) for his contribution and support.

The Stainforth and Keadby Canal has proved a great success for our members during its first year of availability.

But the approach lane at Normanton on Trent is still causing concern despite the fact that part of the lane has already been repaired. It is hoped that if sufficient volunteer members come forward, the remainder of the lane can be improved.

The remainder of the WDAA waters are now into new contracts with the exception of the middle reaches at Normanton where the lease was terminated by the landowner at the beginning of last season.

The young anglers from the cadet, junior and intermediate squads had rewritten the record books during the season by winning virtually every event that they entered.

The cadets (10-13 years) won their age group of the national championships on the Bargate Drain and also took the individual bronze medal. They also won the East Midland region championships and the individual gold medal, and the Cadet team captain had also become the schools national championship individual winner with a record weight of 65lbs 13oz.

The junior age group (13 to 16 years) won their nationals on the Sibsey Trader and also collected the individual gold medal with a record breaking weight of 31lbs 15oz.

They too had won the East Midland Region event backed up with individual gold, silver and bronze medals. Two squad members qualified for the televised Junior Fish O’ Mania event and to their credit took first and second place.

The intermediates (16 to 19 years) won the nationals on the Hobhole Drain and also had the individual winner with a new championship overall record weight of 43lbs 14oz. It is worth noting that this individual also went on to receive the Bassetlaw Senior Sportsman of the Year Award.
If that was not enough glory, one of our Intermediates represented England in the World Youth Championships in Hungary.

The president expressed his thanks for the commitment of Glyn Williams, Mark Pressley Garry Butt, Ken Stevenson, and Mick Burrell and to the parents and families of our junior angling sections.

He then referred to the noble efforts of the senior national squad who, despite a lot of hard work and commitment, had to settle for a midtable position in the Division One Championships and thanks were extended to team manager Gordan Smith and his assistant Gordan Gibson.

The ladies national squad had fished their championship event on the River Soar in Leicestershire where they finished 12th out of 25 teams and they were congratulated on their efforts.

The senior citizens match was held once again at Hallcroft Fisheries near Retford where the event proved to be a huge success and thanks were extended to secretary, Derek Brown and the stewards for their support.

In conclusion, the chairman then thanked the executive committee for their support throughout the year and to Richard Brunt the new match booking secretary and a further compliment was directed to Derek Brown for all his hard work during the year.

Moving onto the main agenda items, the following decisions were confirmed and approved by the members in attendance:

The most controversial decision was to increase the club membership 12-mile radius from headquarters to 30 miles. There was only one vote against this proposal. This now means that any angling club within that catchment area can apply to become members.

With the exception of the assistant secretary’s position, all the current officials were formally re-appointed. Ken Stevenson was elected to take over the assistant secretary’s position.

The following fees or amendments were approved by those in attendance:
Club affiliation and registration fees are to remain the same at £10 and £75 respectively.
The 50p donation to the senior citizens match remains at 50p.

Adult members books were increased to £16.50, juniors and senior citizens were increased to £8 (with immediate effect).

Members match booking fees were increased to £1.50 per peg (with immediate effect).
Non member match booking fees remain at £3.
