Christophor is junior Fish O’Mania champ

Portland school student Christophor Tait, right, is the new Fish O' Mania champion, making it three consecutive years that Worksop Juniors have provided the winning individual in this prestigious event.

This quiet, unassuming and likeable lad qualified for the final by securing the silver medal in the junior nationals that were staged on the Loughborough Canal in July.

The top eight individuals from that competition were, in effect, the top junior anglers in the country on the day.

So the event on Saturday on Lucy’s Lake at Hayfield Lakes near Doncaster became a head to head battle between them all in the hope of securing the 2002 trophy, accompanied by a cheque for £500 plus a digital camera that took the prize tally beyond the £1,000 mark.

On the day, Christophor absolutely obliterated the other seven contestants, weighing in with a new junior Fish O’ Mania record weight of 41lbs 9oz.

His catch comprised of quality carp that were caught on the floating pole at 16 metres, having been enticed with a continuous barrage of feed pellets.

It became an exciting but daunting event for Christophor, as there were no local anglers competing in the main senior event on Adams Lake, so all local supporters congregated behind his peg to give him some vocal support and encouragement.

He did not let them down, as he took the lead immediately, taking quality fish from the first whistle.
At the final weigh-in, his catch was a staggering 25lbs 8oz in front of his nearest rival L. Dance who hit the scales with just 10lbs 8oz, followed by A. Lewis and M. Ruddick on 9lbs 9oz each.

Christophor’s weight was the fourth best on the whole complex on the day, beating many of the senior ladies and gents (including England Internationals) and speaks volumes about his achievements.

So well done Chris, you are credit to the sport of angling, to your family, your school and to Worksop and District Anglers’ Association.

His family has asked me to convey their sincere thanks to all the supporters who were magnificent with their vociferous encouragement on the bankside.

Just for the record, in the nine years that this competition has been organised, Worksop juniors have won the event on four occasions – 1994 Colin Webster, 2000 Craig Locke, 2001 Steven Forster, 2002 Christophor Tait.

Coupled with Colin Webster’s (World Youth Championship gold medal 1998), Andrew Pickersgill’s (World Youth Championship bronze medal 2002), Philip Green’s (Intermediate national gold medal 2001), Steven Forster’s (Junior National gold medal 2001), Worksop Juniors Triple Team gold medals 1999, 2000, 2001, Intermediate National Team gold medal 2001, Cadet National Team gold medal 1999, 2001, Patrick Goulding’s individual gold medal in the Schools National Championships 2001, Worksop are not doing to badly in helping to bring sporting glory to the town!

Are the members of the selection committee of the Bassetlaw Sports Awards taking notice of this roll of honour?

Friday Night Match

The annual juvenile match was fished on Sandhill Lake last Friday evening where a total of 37 youngsters were competing for the major honours.
The overall match winner was Michael Smith, right, (Gateford Angling Supplies) who was fishing his final match as a junior and, knowing that the complex had not been fishing very well during the week, he decided to stick it out on the feeder with worm as bait.
His decision proved to be the correct one as he managed to catch a bream over 3lb to complement the small skimmer that was in his net for a winning weight of 3lbs 5oz.
Adam Littler (Worksop Juniors) was second with 2lbs 13oz followed by Terry Foulds (Worksop Juniors) 1lb 12oz, Chris Taylor (Worksop Juniors) 1lb 9oz, Simon Bolton (Worksop Juniors) 1lb 4oz, Shaun Kearsley (Wakefield) 1lb 3oz, Ashley Nicolson (Worksop Juniors) 1lb 2.5oz, Jason Barsley (Worksop Juniors) 15.75oz.
The 10 to 13-year-old section was won by Jamie Owen 3oz, followed by Kyle Moore 2oz, Matthew Pickwell 1oz.
At the formal presentation, the event organiser Garry Butt expressed his thanks to Worksop and District Anglers’ Association for their support, Sandhill Lake Adventure Base for the use of their facilities, to all of the stewards and a special vote of thanks was extended to all of the sponsors including the four local tackle shops: Angling Supplies, Gateford Angling Supplies, Go Baits (Langold), Ken Ward Sports.
