Angling’s
top names in town for triathlon
Four
of the top names in angling converged on Worksop last Thursday evening.
They were showing their support for Worksop and District Junior Anglers
Associations (WDAA) quest in providing angling activities for junior
members of our community, through their annual triathlon competition.
The Innings at Prospect was packed to the rafters to welcome current ladies
world champion Sandra Scotthorne and husband Alan, the former triple world
champion.
They were accompanied by Ken Ball and David Kent, respective president
and vice president of the National Federation of Anglers (NFA).
During his opening address, event organiser Garry Butt thanked everyone
for their attendance and all those involved in making this years
competition the huge success that it was.
Special thanks were extended to the sponsors, Worksop and District Anglers
Association, Ken Ward Sports, Gateford Angling Supplies, Go-Baits of Langold,
Angling Supplies of Manton, Grafton Angling Association, Shakespeare,
Mel Wilde Products for Octoplus, Preston Innovations, Drennan, Middy,
Dam Waterline, Leeda, Pure Fishing, Bassetlaw Trophies, Cottingham Bookmakers,
Bassetlaw Dental, Men Only Barbers, Jeans Station, Sheffield Refractories,
Geoffrey Allisons, Richards Furnishings, the Worksop Guardian and
the Innings.
Donations have also been received from the Landells, the Pickersgills,
the Foys, the Williams, the Nicolsons as well as Derek Brown, Geoff Barker,
Bill Parnam, David Bolton, Tommy Preen and David Bolton.
During the course of the evening, quite a number of prizes were distributed,
including a large bouquet of flowers presented by the executive committee
of WDAA to mark Sandra Scotthornes achievement in securing the world
championship crown earlier in the year.
Garry Butt, who apart from organising the triathlon event, has also been
working hard behind the scenes to gain grants for fishing equipment to
encourage young children into the sport of angling.
He successfully applied for a grant from South Rotherham Community Chest
of £405 to provide 15 life jackets to be worn by children while
angling.
He then went on to apply for a grant of £4,946 from Awards for All
to provide angling equipment in three disciplines of coarse fishing (pole,
float and feeder).
This helped to encourage young children to take part in angling activities
under the supervision of the NFAs Coaching scheme.
Further equipment was still required for coarse, fly and sea fishing.
So he looked again for more funding and this came from South Yorkshire
Polices ABC Awards as he received £2000.
This covered equipment, pegging fees, trophies, presentation and administration
costs for licence fees.
The idea was to target children within the local area who without this
equipment would be unable to participate.
All the grants that Garry received has allowed him to provide angling
tuition and competitions for children between the age of eight to 16 from
his own angling club at Wales and Kiveton Park, as well as the WDAA activities.
On the night, Garry received three large cheques to the total amount of
nearly £7,400 from Alan and Sandra Scotthorne.
Alan, who is sponsored by tackle manufacturer Shimano, presented a 12.5
metre quality pole to 14-year-old Trevor Brooks.
The young angler was out of the main prizes in the triathlon competition
but, during the course of the three match series, had shown good ability
and commitment under very difficult personal circumstances.
Chris Tait, 15, presented a tankard to Geoff Tomlinson to show his appreciation
for the support that he had received from him in the build up to securing
the Junior Fish O Mania Championship in August.
The leading places in the competition will be published next week.
