World champs bronze

Congratulations are extended to Worksop's Andrew Pickersgill who has come home from the World Youth Championships in Italy with a team bronze medal, an honour that he will surely treasure for the rest of his life.

Accompanying Andrew on the trip was fellow Worksop and District Intermediate squad member Marc Foy, of Langold, who will also have picked up a bronze medal for being part of the squad that represented England in these prestigious Championships that were staged on the river Arno near Pisa last weekend.

Host nation Italy were always going to be favourites on their own waters and so it proved when they were announced the 2002 World Champions with just a 15 point penalty, seven points from day one and eight from day two.

They secured two consecutive individual section winners for a perfect allocation of two points each.
They also had two squad members with three points and one with five points. This quality and standard of team fishing will probably never ever be beaten in future world championship events.
Hungary took the team silver medal – way behind on 41pts – followed by Team Drennan England with 58pts.

Other leading teams were France 62pts, Portugal 67pts, Spain 73pts, Belgium 80pts.
When you witness the wide gulf between first and seventh team place it shows just how dominant the five person squad representing Italy were over the two day event.
