Thanks for the menu memories

I would like to express my thanks to Johnny Kirby, of Worksop, who has kindly provided me with a top quality menu from one of the well known restaurants that quite a number of our older anglers may remember from the 1960s and 1970s.

The menu is from the Neneside Restaurant on the North Bank of the River Nene at Peterborough and it also includes a match weight return card on its reverse side.

Those amongst you who can remember that far back will confirm that they were the good old days when literally hundreds of anglers travelled all over the country on buses and trains in pursuit of either match or pleasure activities in the sport you all enjoyed.

I have taken the liberty of extracting some of the culinary delights and their respective prices from the menu.

Breakfast: egg and bacon, beans or tomatoes, two shillings and sixpence (12.5p); egg and sausage, beans or tomatoes, two shillings and sixpence (12.5p); bacon and sausage, beans or tomatoes, two shillings and sixpence (12.5p); egg, bacon, sausage, beans or tomatoes, three shillings and three-pence (15.25p); buttered toast, four pence (1.5p); coffee, eight pence (3p); tea, sixpence (2.5p);

Dinner: soup, eight-pence (2.5p); steak and kidney pie, two Veg, three shillings (15p); roast lamb, two veg, three shillings and sixpence (17.5p); roast beef, two veg, three shillings and sixpence (17.5p); roast pork, two veg, four shillings (20p); roast chicken, two veg, four shillings and sixpence (22.5p); Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes, sixpence each (2.5p).

Sweet: apple tart and custard, damson tart and custard, gooseberry tart and custard, steam pudding and custard, or rice pudding, nine-pence (3.5p)

Has this whetted your appetite and brought back some happy memories.

Angling Sessions

The sixth angling course being delivered by National Federation of Anglers coach, Ken Stevenson under the partnership agreement with North Notts College is now entering its closing stages.

The sessions have been taking place at the Flying Scotsman Hotel at Hallcroft and will conclude with a bankside session on the Chesterfield Canal at Retford on 10th March.

All of the registered students who have taken part have expressed their delight at the content of the course that included two presentations delivered by guest speakers Jon Wall (Jon Wall Fisheries), fish netting, also Ian Wellby (Brocksbury College), fish biology, parasites and diseases.
The topics of discussion certainly created a lot of debate for the students on the course.

Winter League

Worksop United's Winter League results for the Saturday match held at Ranby and sponsored by Angling Supplies of Retford Road are: Malcolm Rushton with a mixed bag for 5lbs 7oz with the pole using squatt or pinkie at peg one, Paul Rushton was second with 4lbs 13oz, followed by Pete Brown 2lbs 6oz.

Cromwell Lake

Quality pike are still being taken at this complex near Newark, as proven by this quality 26lbs fish that was caught by Mick Noon on half a mackerel.
