Shirebrook Angling Club

10th May 2006

Members of Shirebrook Angling Club went fishing to Press Manor Fisheries at Wingerworth on 30th April 2006.

The young anglers aged between 11 -16 all entered in a fishing match that had been organised by the match Secretaries Dave Mellor's and David Hayes. Four other anglers who went had a go at pleasure fishing while six other adult members of the club supervised the young anglers during the match.

There was great excitement when Declan Kavanagh hooked a big carp and you could hear other anglers in the match saying "that's it, Declan has got to have won it now" but through sheer desperation to get the fish in and weighed, Declan pulled a little too hard and his line snapped, so from nearly winning the match Declan ended up coming last.

The final winners were, 1st Daniel Harrison with 5lb 8oz, 2nd Jamie O'Connor with 3lb 12oz and 3rd Connor Kavanagh with 2lb 12oz.

The owner of the ponds, Bernie Maher, let the club fish at a discounted rate as 3 of our members on the day were National Federation of Anglers (NFA) coaches.

The trophies were presented to the young anglers by the bailiff Brian Kirkman and everyone who went on the trip said that they had really enjoyed it and look forward to other matches.

Shirebrook Angling Club is setting up 6 matches on behalf of Shirebrook Town Council in the weeks leading up to Shirebrook Festival. There are 3 adult matches with 1st £100, 2nd £50 and 3rd £30.
