| Love them or hate them, you can’t ignore eels because they are present in virtually every canal, stillwater and rivers. Big eels over 2lb are hard to catch though, and you have to target them in summer, and at night. The record is over 11lb - thick as your arm! | |

| Swims close to canal bridges are known to be hotspots. The best baits are either a small dead fish, or a bunch of lobworms. Fish on a single size 4 or 6 hook with a wire trace, or the eel will bite through the line. You’ll need a head torch, so you can see the indicator rise. If you have a bite alarm, so much the better. | |

| Eels are amazingly difficult to keep still. To unhook, hold the fish through the landing net and use forceps. | |
