Springs here--- so lets get fishing

Hi there,

Now armed with the cleaned-up tackle, (see archives - Ed), complete with my new rod licences and permits - off we set...

I fish all the year around but I always look forward to the Spring, and oh boy - it has arrived now, but in true English style: hot, cold, rain and hail.

I've just returned from Skegness where we fished the Chapel St. Leonard boating lake - and we failed badly. Getting there at 4.55am to our horror we found it was packed and by 7am there were 17 anglers fishing the lake. And try as we might, the fish didn't want our bait.

The week before I had two fish in the rain. It was BAD - I mean BAD. It rained all day, but having had two fish and the weather promising to get better - I couldn't wait to get back.

My second visit was a week before the bank holiday, so why was everyone there a week early? And 15 of the 17 were from NOTTINGHAM ! Several anglers caught fish up to 17lb but none of the biggies showed up.

It's a hard life... Dave with a couple of birds...

Most caught on bread popped-up to the top and submerged every time a goose (shouldn't they have flown home by now?), duck, moorhen, etc., tried to eat it.

That's not for me and it's the main reason we blanked. The cost of a session here is £7 for two rods, which is not bad I suppose. Fishing is from dawn to dusk.

Next stop was Sycamore Lakes at Burgh-le-Marsh (the windmill village near Skeg.), here it's up to three rods for £10 or £8 for two.

From the off this was more my cup of tea, Sunday roast with all the trimmings, but still more geese and gangs of marauding male mallards - those poor old females is all I can say - but then, that's nature I suppose.

Fishwise - my friend Jamie Alexander had two, both beauties - one around five pounds, the other a linear of 13lb 2oz. (caught on my bait I must add) - 14mm Red Baron from custom baits (www.custombaitservices.co.uk).

Another friend John Phillips - helped out just before dinner when two rods roared off together. He only made the trip over with his wife to clear the cobwebs from an evening of fun, but caught a beautiful ghost koi of just over 9lb.

My fish weighed only 7lb (ish) but I did end up with nine carp up to 17lb 6oz. A mixture of commons and mirrors. They were nearly all caught on Custom Baits Red Baron small boilies or fake corn from Enterprise Innovations. All were caught in the margins, while the boilie brigade were all chucking to the middle.

I don't think I did too bad, as I've not fished there for a few years.

Will I be going back again? You bet I will.

Cheers
Dave Williams
