Wet and Windy at Junior Event

Why is it every week the weather's great and at the weekends it throws it down?

Well it did the Saturday of the 13th of August when the East Midlands Carp Study Group held their yearly junior event at SHERWOOD FOREST FISHERY near the Farm Park, Edwinstow !

The barbecue got things going with bacon butties as people arrived. Then they perused the lake before the draw for pegs. This done - it was on with the fishing. A short break for lunch served by Jane Phillips and assisted by Clare Webster and it rained like it had never rained before.

Ben Black from Reading was the man to catch up with as he had eight carp to 9lb, caught on maize fished in the margins. Lorraine Bunny from Nottingham had half a dozen up to 7lb as did Rhyce Webster using uncle Johns rods, most of his fish coming to cockles fished tight to the pads. His sisters didn't want to be left out and both Elli and Layla had three and four each to 7lb ish.

Fishing quietly and at the other end of the lake was James, (more lemonade please John), Williams, who was amounting a tally - which at the end of the day totalled 14 carp, with fish of 10lb 4oz, 12lb and 12lb 8oz. James used the rod he won last year and went on to win a reel for the biggest fish of the day caught by a junior, or an adult for that matter. He used sweetcorn with the method fished to the island and under a tree.
The reel was donated by Don Ritchie on the DAM stand at the 5 Lakes Show.

Dale Wood had a few as did his younger brother Rhys who fished with Pooley and Daddy Wood, who all had a few.

All the youngsters had a sense of achievement at completing the day as I think all the parents did with not one child wanting to pack up early - even with rain for 3/4 of the day !

WELL DONE BOYS AND GIRLS FROM ALL THE HELPERS AND ORGANISERS.

Local Waters
WEST LAKE Nottingham is fishing well, so the bailiffs tell me The best fish reported is a 23lb 6oz mirror caught by a disabled angler, who also had a couple of doubles. Plenty of doubles caught but not reported to the wardens. 0115 9870785.

LAKESIDE FISHERIES at Ranskill is fishing well for doubles as Will Thompson from Sheffield had over 100lb in a day session from one of the finger ponds. The bait - sweetcorn ! Scott Jackson from Manchester fishing peg 3 had eight carp to 23lb 10oz. Paul Leason from Sheffield fished peg 4 to take four fish up to 21lb 2oz. To book a peg please call 01777 818524

Allen Fiewicks had three to 34lb 3oz with a few skimmers as well. Nick Gleddill from Nottingham had a 24lb 8oz mirror. Mr Cunningham had a few doubles up to 16lb, he came from Nottingham and all his fish were mirrors! Mr I. Stokes had fine 17lb 5oz common and two smaller doubles. The small stock lake is fishing well with a few school lads having right hit fishing for a few days and being kept awake day and night with fish to over 12lb. Mainly caught on sweetcorn fished to the far margin. I only have one name which is Matt Rosevear.

CROMWELL LAKES. Gary tells me it's fishing very well. Alwynne Hulmne from Kirkby in Ashfield fished peg 52 and had a 29lb 8oz mirror on sweetcorn. James Hart from Nottingham fished pineapple boilie from peg 44/45 and had a cracker of 21lb 8oz - a mirror. Adam Cuff from Nottingham fished from peg 60 and had a bream or two then a mint 22lb two-tone mirror. Shaun Whales from Shirebrook fished bread from peg 37 and had a 17lb 8oz mirror. John from Wakefield fished peg 44/45 using the method and a couple, including a fine common of 18lb 4oz. John Terrington from Coventry had a beauty from peg 3 weighing in at 22lb 8oz. Mr Alwin went again and had a 25lb 8oz common from peg 44/45. Seems to be the swim at the moment. He caught that on sweetcorn as well. Last but no means least is Shaun Whale[again] with two doubles to 15lb 10oz. Call 01636 822425 for more details.

Nottingham's COVERT SPRINGS is fishing very well with fish to mid doubles, so Rob the owner tells me. Carp are being caught all over to various methods. Sorry no names from here.

Same as WOODALL POND, was Walkers pond, where they are getting caught but I've no names as the bailiff only makes note of the larger ones and none of them have been caught lately.

BUTTERLY RESERVOIR is still fishing well - for bream. The carp are seldom being caught due to the bream taking everything that's thrown at them. Paul Wells and Jay Mills keep trying but get breamed out at the moment. Call 01773 746486.

BULWELL HALL PARK POND is taking a hammering at present with the kids being on hols. The largest I've heard of is a 16lb common caught on sweetcorn.

BESTWOOD PONDS where things have slowed down somewhat after a fish kill!
The kill happened a few weeks ago on pond one but the other ponds have seemed to shut up shop as well. Lets hope there is no knock-on effect here. 0115 9199500 for an application form to join.

STREELY POND has slowed down or it just because the Robinson brothers are at scenes for a week or two ? But those having them are fishing the margins with boilies or surface baits on the back wind.

The river TRENT seems to be having a few problems at the moment with a few fish going belly up, this includes carp, but so far none of the known biggies have been reported to me.

Wain from Bestwood Nottingham had a fine high double from THE A1 PITS a week ago. He's been fishing there for weeks and thoroughly deserves his catch and a common to boot. Well done mate took it's time in coming, but well worth the wait. Photo soon I hope mate ?

Please mention this column when calling any of the above fisheries as this helps me get catch reports from the owners.
