The inside story of Strike-One Baits
The story begins with my grand-daughter’s
‘A’-level biology revision, back in the year 2000. After
asking her a question from her note book, my eyes wandered down the
page, I saw an article there and immediately thought, I wonder if that
would work on fish?
To learn more, I went to the Harvard University website and in their
biology section found the ingredient I was looking for, the task now
was to find who made the stuff and where I could buy it.
I asked numerous organisations, being careful not to disclose too much
information as to its proposed use. I even asked the Pharmaceutical
Association in the UK but they declined to talk to me, as I wasn’t
a qualified chemist. Nobody was prepared to give me any information.
I spoke to a friend of mine whose father was a chemist and he gave me
a name of a company in the UK who he believed manufactured the product.
However on contacting them, they informed me that they didn’t,
but their parent company in the United States did. I was over the moon
at last I was reaching my goal, but that was short lived as this parent
company would not allow me to purchase the product from them, I was
told I could only buy it through an agent. I managed to find an agent
in the USA who would allow me to buy a small quantity to try out my
idea. What has taken a few words in fact took me nearly 12 months to
achieve.
Finally I had the product, but how do I use it, how much do I need,
what can I use as a medium? As an engineer, but always a fisherman,
I started experimenting with different recipes, attempting to make a
paste for fishing. I tried several preparations, and after reworking
a batch I discovered, by accident the successful recipe I was looking
for.
It was now time to do my trials, I went to my local fishery Tingrith
near Toddington. I put on my first piece of paste and cast out. My float
went straight down, as if as though I had set the depth wrongly. My
reel screamed and I landed my first fish less then 30 seconds of being
in the water, an 8lb 4oz common carp.
I was shocked and more than amazed. I repeated the exercise again and
again, each time catching carp both mirror and commons. I had landed
seven carp in less then 10 mins.
The thought that crossed my mind at this time, was this to good to be
true. I had to go to other venues to prove this wasn’t a one-off
situation. So the following day I went to Toddington Fisheries a short
distance away. The same thing happened there, only this time I landed
bream, roach, carp and tench. I was over the moon, so I decided to enter
a open charity match - the 9/11 Anniversary at Oham lakes near Mablethorpe.
Over 80 anglers entered including many professionals.
I decided to fish in the margins and within less then a minute I was
into a large carp, I pulled out, six times on the trot this happened,
I changed my hook size to a 4 from a 10 barbless. I was so up-tight,
I left my peg and went for a cup of tea to calm myself down.
I returned to my peg after half an hour, and landed a further 4 carp
which as it turned out gave me 2nd place in the match, any one of the
fish I had lost that day would have secured 1st place for me and my
bait, I was beaten by less then three pounds.
This was noticed by Rod Parks, and after the match spoke to me in the
café on the lake, and ask me what was I using. I told him that
it was a bait I had developed. He ask me if I had ever thought of producing
it commercially. The thought had never entered my head. After doing
some maths on the costs of production, he said I should try it, so that
is how it all began.
My successful bait has claimed the South African Carp record of 31.8
kegs, and has to date four French lake records, one of which my nephew
holds a 47lb 10oz mirror carp.
And believe it or not, my boilies have even caught fish in the sea off
the Brighton marina.
To ascertain the baits’ success I asked members of the NFA to
field test it. Julian Taylor and Glyn Williams used the bait and were
over the moon with their success in the river Derwent where they landed
several large barbel between them. They both said they would endorse
the bait. Another coach down in Essex, Kevin Pestel used the bait and
wrote an article in the local sports magazine, he said ‘everyone
should use, it is a must to go fishing with, like your rod or pole’.
I am trying to give to the British angler a product which has proven
successful everywhere it has been used. The ingredient which makes this
bait so successful is in fact a smell that all animals and fish and
birds relate to - food!
Boilies and hook pellets (6mm and 4mm) are available through myself
and Badger International Ltd. The paste is available from me alone.
