Kevin Bryan, of Stockport, claimed he nearly fell out of his boat when he first caught a glimpse of the 14lb 4oz rainbow trout.
After half an hour of careful coaxing, he brought the beast to his net - a feat all the more amazing given that the leader line he was using had a breaking strain of just 4lbs.
It was the highlight so far for the Peak District fishery which has enjoyed an excellent start to the season with high rod averages.
