Dishermans View - reports
on fisheries from a Disabled Fisherman's point of view
If you can recommend any fisheries that would be suitable for our disabled readers, please e-mail the details for inclusion on these pages. Many thanks - Ian Cloke (Slacklines) Aston
Ponds
Aston
Ponds has recently had a face lift, making the first pond more accessible
to disabled anglers. The new owner, Ken, has done a really good job so far, in my opinion. As soon as you get to the first lake, you can see where to park, and then you have to travel all of 5 yards to fish! On the wall side, there are six pegs that are wheelchair friendly, with enough room for a helper on each of these. If you go towards the cafe, there are six platforms, although only two of these have enough room for an angler & a helper. Whilst mentioning the cafe Wendy & Sally are the ladies who run it, they serve a full English breakfast, sandwiches (hot or cold) plus numerous other delicacies from
their menu. The cafe opens at 9am weekdays & 7am weekends and
closes at 1pm(winter times) these times will alter when the weather
warms up. It is easy to get to, up a slight ramp, as are the disabled
toilets. If you are unable to get to the cafe, for any reason, the
ladies will bring your order to your peg. Back to the fishery, there are only two rules, firstly barbless hooks only, secondly NO keepnets allowed (except in matches). I have been reliably informed (by Tony the bailiff) that the best baits for winter are, maggot & caster, whilst pellet & paste produce very good weights in the summer. Although I have yet to fail using Champion Baits soft hooker pellets, used over the low pro green feed pellets in winter. The fish you can expect to catch are: carp up to 20lb, bream up to 7/8lb, roach which are quite often caught over the 1lb mark, rudd to 1lb, perch up to 3lb, and there are tench up to 5lb plus barbel and ide have recently been stocked. Directions To get to Aston Ponds, come off the M1 northbound at junction 31, take the first turn (onto the A57) then at the first roundabout, take the first turn, then turn left after 20 yards, and your on the track to the fishery. You will see the first pond after about 100 yards. Contact Ken on 0114 2470876 for any further details. Good
