Borwick Fishing Club Roundup

The passing of the autumn equinox has confirmed the ever shortening days. This has been reinforced at borwickfishing.co.uk by the disappearance of swallows long ago and the arrival, on consecutive days, of two large flocks of overwintering Pochard, Mallard and Tufted Duck.

The period of transition from Summer to Winter that waters experience in Autumn is now ending and fish settling down to reduced but steady feeding. Soon anglers on the Carp Pools will be swapping their poles and slow sinking baits for feeder rods and baits in deeper water.

However at present the fish are still widespread and responding to Summer tactics in shallower water. 119lb was needed to take first place in the recent Goss AC match, but this did not last long as the best weight of 2007. Within a month a Vernons AC match saw 1st and 2nd catches of 129lb and 125lb and just a week later, the club returned to provide a 118lb winner!

The bigger Carp on Jimmy’s Lake have taken longer to settle down and young Connor Mooring has retained his claim to the Specimen Crown with his fine catch. After a run of blank sessions his patience paid off and he recorded 17 Carp above 13lb in five sessions with 4 over 21lb, topped by a Common weighing in at 22lb 8oz and including a 13lb Ghostie from Jimmy’s Lake! Most other anglers on the lake had to be content with Tench running up to double figures. The Last Blast has producd Wels Catfish of 15lb and 20lb and Grass Carp of 12lb and 16lb though.

The smaller pools, popular with the less serious anglers, continue to provide consistent sport with a wide variety of species, including ornamentals.

As temperatures continue to fall the fish need less food, but fortunately for anglers, natural food productions stops too; so if the fish want food they are forced to turn to anglers’ baits. Location is important too as the fish pack into tight shoals; but find the right spot and the biggest catches of the year are on the cards.
